Seeing that the ring is from your Grandmother I'm inclined to think it may be alexandrite. My other thought if it's a newer ring that it would be mystic topaz. Ask the jewellers you've been to when they will be bringing in a gemologist to do appraisals. Many of the chain store jewellery shops do that at least once a year. Good luck and enjoy the ring for both it's beauty and it's sentiment.
