My great-grandmother's engagement ring was pearls with purple amethysts. My mom has been saving this ring to give to my bf when he proposes. I don't care for diamonds and love this ring and it has sentimental value.
However, she was just told that pearls don't make good engagement rings because they shrink when wet and can fall out. So, I have a few questions. Does anyone have a pearl engagement ring? Is it hard to care for? How practical would it be? Also, does anyone know if this is actually true and if so, how do I really care for a pearl ring? I'm trying to do some research to see how I can keep the ring and not change the setting and not have to worry about taking it off all the time in the shower, dishes, when putting on moisturizer (I know moisturizer can ruin pearls), etc.
If I should post this on another forum, please let me know. Any advice, tips, suggestions, etc, would be really appreciated! I desperately want this ring but if it's too impractical...
Thank you!

i know you should avoid soaps, cleansers, lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, and heat. all these things damage pearls. i found a few links with some info...

but honestly, i would maybe consider wearing this ring on special occasions only and then having another ring for daily use. you are going to need to take off the ring when showering and washing dishes. sorry, this ring sounds beautiful though...
