I just received an amethyst ring as a gift I've never seen a gemstone cut this way before. The stone is very large, about 3/4 of an inch in lenth and it is flanked on one side by tiny diamonds. It is a slightly oval stone, smooth and round on top, like a slightly deflated marble and it is faceted at the botton. It is a very deep dark plum color. Can anybody give me the back story on this ring?

it sonds like a cabochon cut, but w/o seeing it, i can't positively say. cabochons have a smooth rounded top surface you can see some examples at http://www.unicorns-garden.com/info/cabi…
